A Finish - EK 1653

My adaptation of EK was finally finished tonight and came in at 38" long. As I stitched each band I found so much beauty but my favourite bands were the last two and I have decided to incorporate these motifs into the design for my casket in the Cabinet of Curiosties course.

I am sorry about the photographs, I will take proper photographs in daylight when she comes back from the framers. No super fast framing this time as the framer is on holiday :o((

My plan was to continue with Ellenor Wykcs and start Ruthy Rogers but this week I have been asked to stitch the handicraft item for my W.I's group entry for a show so I will be side tracked for a few weeks.

Ruthy Rogers

I mentioned in my post yesterday about starting Ruthy Rogers. After seeing Barbara G's Ruthy (the photos are Barbara's Ruthy) I have not been able to get this sampler out of my mind.

This is way out of my comfort zone but I am going to give her a try. Bob of Winderwood Farm is joining me and if anyone else would like to stitch with us you would be very welcome.

I know that Marsha and Barbara are there for us if help is needed.

I meant to include this photo in my post about EK yesterday, here I am with my sisters and Mother.

Bonnes  Pacques, buona Pasqua. I was baptized in the eastern orthodox church, so "our" Easter is celebrated two weeks later than western Easter.
The Araucana hens lay green, blue and pink eggs, and here is my Easter basket with naturally dyed eggs.
The second photo (awful, apologies, my camera battery failed and it will be hours before I can take a better photo), shows part of the German sampler that I am currently graphing.  It's dated 1734 and is replete with symbolic motifs.

I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable Easter Sunday. We started the day with a long walk with Poppy and Blue and got caught in torrential rain a fair distance from home.

Hot showers and cups of tea were required on our return home and the afternoon and evening have been spent in front of the wood burner stitching on Ellenor?

Here are the latest bands, only two more (ableit large ones) to go and she will be finished.

She is the prettiest of samplers. There are alot of similarities in the design to EK 1653 so the bands seem familiar.

I have spent time this weekend watching Mary Corbett's video on stem stitch and reading her articles. It was very interesting reading about S and Z twisted threads and then practicing the stitch with the thread above and then below the needle and seeing the different way the thread sits.

There is so much to learn about needlework and I am enjoying sharing this journey with you all.

Ann Medd - A finish!

Trumpet fanfare....ANN MEDD IS FINISHED!!!!  No idea HOW I am going to get her framed in the near future, as I have not seen any framers around in this part of Normandy.  I will post on FB as well, as I know there are some ex-pat stitchers not that far from me and they may have the solution. I usually, trawl the charity shops until I find something right, but along with Pak Choi and English Cheddar, charity shops are something pretty non-existent over here.

I have made a couple of changes in the Adam and Eve band.  I skipped the entire one over animals, as I hate one over.  Because something was needed to fill the space, I found a peacock pattern on the internet, which had been found on a 1742 sampler. As the date at the bottom, is 1742, I thought that a good tie-in.   At the top I put in a flower, which was adapted from the ones higher up on the border.   I had unpicked some one-overs, and had made a small hole, which I was able to fill but it needed something over it to hide the fact it was a mend.   The tiny animals, under the trees, are a cockerel and a hen, a rabbit and a cat representing all my girls and boys past and present.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Ann Medd, honestly, every stitch, even having to unpick all the turquoise so that I could make it dark blue.  Just sorry she wasn’t finished in time for the end of Nicola’s year.

I finished Ellenor last night.

I have omitted the Alphabet at the very bottom.

This sampler is so pretty and I would be hard pushed to choose a favourite band.

Possibly this last band.

Here is an overall view. The light is not ideal for photographs, we are in the middle of a bad storm.

I plan to start Ruthy Rogers tonight.

Happy Dancing!!! Ann Medd is Finished!!

Finally finished Ann Medd yesterday!!  Started her about 2 years ago.. She is the project that brought me to the SL Blog.  Things went really well until I got to the last section.. Oh my heavens .. all that tent stitch.. NO WAY.... so she did not see the light of day for some time... Then Nicola and Deb told me how they finished that part over 2... Thank you so much for the suggestion! What a relief.. so out she came again...until I made a mistake somewhere and could not find it.... Back into hiding she went.
at that time never to see the light of day again as I was sooooo frustrated..Until a good friend was at my house stitching and she pulled Ann from the deep dark depths of my stitching room and said what is this... My response.. Oh that is Ann Medd, there is a mistake in it and I can't find it... of course her response was "we can find it, You must finish this!"  So we did...I ended up frogging most of the verses on the right side and restitching them..In the end I am so happy that I did!  As I now can say I have finished the Sampler of all Samplers!!  She will travel with me to a stitching retreat this coming weekend and then off to the framers. It is a Happy Day and let the Dancing continue!!!

Ruthy Rogers - A Start

The chart recommends to begin in the upper left corner and to stitch all the cross stitched sections. Oh dear - I have done neither.

My reason for starting bottom left is that I might add a little something to the upper section. I did intend to dutifully work all the cross stitches but I could not resist having a dabble with the satin and stem stiches.

It is early days but I am liking stem stitch.

Ruthy is very well charted with excellent and detailed instructions. I feel if Marsha is right here holding my hand.

Good Morning!

Here is progress on Elizabeth Mitchell as of Saturday morning.  I stitched a little more this weekend…but not enough!!  At least the borders are finished and they met up!  A miracle of sorts.  A couple of close-up shots, the last one finally showing the paler green color in the top and bottom borders…so pretty!

This week will be very busy at work as well as at home getting ready for vacation – yay!!  Still trying to reach Marsha to find out if we can visit The Scarlet Letter or not – fingers crossed.  Will let you know.  Meanwhile, everything is blooming and popping out.  Spring seems to have finally arrived…and with it the ticks the cat is bringing into the house – yuck!

Have a great week!

Finally some progress on The Knox Family Sampler

$

I have been working almost exclusively on The Knox Family sampler. It is a very slow painstaking process on this one, and sometimes it seems like it will never be finished.

The beginning rows of alphabet all use the same two colors, and it does get a bit monotonous.

Some of the dividers between the alphabets are interesting. It is hard to see the detail here, but here is a slice.

The entire inner border is done in a straight stitch in dark gold.
The first dividing band is done in dark gold cross stitch.
The second band is done in a back stitch using medium green.
The third dividing band is done in a zig-zag fashion with alternating straight stitches of green on the upswing, and dark gold on the down swing.
The fourth dividing band is done in a Long Legged Cross Stitch.
The fifth dividing band is done in Old Fashioned Cross Stitch.

Finally I got to the point where I can work with pink!
Next come the large illuminated letters. Each one takes quite a while to complete.

First the letter is stitched, then the filigree work is completed.

This is where it stands so far.

I love the soft, muted colors of this sampler!

Although I get quite frustrated with the slow progress of the Knox sampler, I feel like it will be worth the trouble when it is finished, at least I hope so!

Ruthy's Apple Tree

Ruthy Rogers is progressing and her tree has taken root and is laden with bright red apples. I am enjoying stem stitch, it is so fluid. Getting to grips with stem stitch opens up a whole new world of samplers.

Eliz. Cox has been hovering around the top of my "dream stitch" list for some time and this week I have kitted her up to follow on from Ruthy.

She is such a stunner but this section was way out of my comfort zone but I now think it is doable. Stitching with our group and the support and encouragement we give to each other has made so many samplers doable for us.

(both photos of Eliz. Cox courtesy of The Scarlet Letter)

The next step for me on Ruthy is to stitch the birds and the sky sections. I really like how the chart shows the stitch directions for the sky area and breaks the large area down into small workable sections.

Ellenor has come home

Ellenor is home from the framers but EK is still waiting for a mount. She was too big for the framer to cut the mount himself so it has had to be ordered pre-cut.

Now to find the perfect place to hang her.

It is a beautiful day here and I long to sit with Ruthy and stitch but today I have lots of chores to do first both inside and out.

I have decided to unpick a few of the sections that I am not entirely happy with. When you photograph your work you notice things that you miss when actually stitching.

I hope that my interpretation of stem stitch filling is correct. I have never actually seen stem stitch filling other than in photographs.

The moth's body should have been stitched in stem but the effect of satin stitch appealed more to me.

Now I had better get back to my housework, sooner started, sooner finished.

Sorry - I haven't posted for ages - I sort of lost my way a bit with my cross stitch. However, I seem to be back on track and Miss Margaret is coming along nicely. The colours are beautiful.

I have also started working on Elizabeth Brain again. All the wonderful photos of Ruthy Rogers have spurned me on.

Meanwhile, over on Blog Two...

When Nicola and I started the Scarlet Letter Blog we never dreamed it would attract so many wonderful stitchers from all over the World.  So many in fact that we rapidly filled Blog One and had to start Blog Two.

However we have noticed that Blog Two does not attract the same viewing figures as Blog One.  So in order to tempt you over there I will be doing a weekly recap of posts on Blog Two, starting today with May so far.

Please pop over there and say Hi to the stitchers too.  We all love comments!!
