I feel as if I have been missing in action but I have been busy stitching away on the model for Eleanor Parr. Eliz. Cox has been put to one side but will be picked straight back up when Eleanor is finished.

This is where I was when I started Eleanor.

Marsha is still charting Eleanor and is current working on the vines and leaves that connect the birds in the outer border.

I have so much respect for Marsha's charting skills and seeing the chart grow has been an amazing experience.

Miss Scarlet and Miss Georgina have made an appearance and the four corner motifs have been stitched.

Thank you Marsha for allowing me to share these with you.

Eleanor is a big girl at 426 x 490 and is stitched over two with the exception of the verse which is over one and a small area under the girls feet which will be in stem stitch but can be crossed stitched if preferred.

She should be ready for shipping at the end of October or November so will be perfect for our Christmas list.

I hope to post another sneak peak soon.

Everyone in the group should now have received an email from Jo about Out of Print Charts and a new page

We know that many of you would love to stitch Marsha's OOP samplers and that some people may own an OOP chart and would be happy to see it go on to a new home to be stitched and loved.

Marsha has kindly given us permission to set up this page for people to sell, trade, lend or gift their OOP charts.

Please note, this is ONLY for out of print charts, if you want to stitch one which is currently in print, please support your designer and buy new!

This is how it works -

If you have an OOP chart please email Nicola with the details; title, condition and whether it is for loan or sale (please state price)
.
Nicola will post the details on the new page and on the main blog.

If you would like an OOP chart you see, email Nicola who will then put you in touch with the owner.

After that it is a private transaction between the two of you.  We do recommend sending any money via a secure system (Paypal offers some protection) and sending the chart by registered or insured post.
We will not be held liable for any failed transactions.

If there is a particular OOP chart you are searching for then please email Nicola and she will put a "Wanted" advert here.

If you find any OOP charts either on Ebay or in a needlework shop, again email Nicola with the details.

Dona Dorothea Update

Hi Everyone,

Just about to my most favorite season of all!  I know some of you are sorry to see summer waning…but I am more than ok with that.  Though, as my husband has said:  “this has been the BEST summer I can ever remember!”  We have had warm days, cool nights.  It has been beautiful.  Our garden is different – some things are (have been) taking off…others are doing nothing.  But we are enjoying it all.  The fact that we have not had to use the AC for weeks is a gift especially after last winter’s heating  bills).

It has been some time since I last posted.  Not as much stitching as I would have hoped for, but busy with other things (putting up garden produce, making curtains for our new camper, napping, reading, etc.).  I’ve also done some changes – I cut my hair which was almost to my waist!!  It is now ultra short (I have been known to do this before)…think going from very long hair to a cut like Claire Underwood’s (for those of you who are “House of Cards” fans).  I love it!

Without further chatter, here are pics of where I am on Dona Dorothea.  I love, love, love this sampler.  It is beautiful.  First an overall shot and then a couple of close-ups.  You will see the checkerboard stag/deer is now stitched.  How cute is that?  A bunch more motifs to stitch and then on to the bands at the bottom.

So many more samplers to tempt us all.  At times it hard to stay on task and not get distracted – lol.

You can see in the close-up above that the pale cream color (in the motif to the left of the lion) does not show up very well.  I may change that out for another color in some motifs.  I think it will be ok in buildings (where other colors surround it), but by itself it needs a little something more I think.

Hope everyone is enjoying the end of summer and looking forward to a fun/glorious Fall.  I’ve been enjoying all the recent updates on the blog.

My Scarlet Letter Almost Year

Every time I have taken a picture of M. Quertier with the intention of posting an update.  Something happens.
  • Computer dies
  • Computer is fried by electrical strike to our travel trailer
  • We rescued what turned out to be a Lhasa Apso from a frozen shoulder of the road
  • Jeff gets one kidney stone after another, requiring surgery
  • I have a PTSD episode leading to months of increased depression
  • I’ve take a couple online classes that are rather time consuming
And then there is the fact that every time I take a picture it is that very night rendered irrelevant as I complete the current motif or start another.  That is the case today.  I finished the motif that appears to be in progress.  Then completed the carnation under it and am half-way through the top motif on the right edge.  So I can say honestly I am half done!
I love stitching this piece and don’t want it to end.  It is so relaxing and feels like a bit of “self-care” when I am stitching it.  Time seems to stop.  Even when I’m frogging, which I have done a few times.  On the other hand, I have been so inspired by all the work I have seen on this site that I want get to the next one—soon!  I thought I would do the Christmas sampler from last year, but there are so many on my wish list to choose from.  I am immersing myself in Christmas projects right now and the Christmas sample may just be “too much” Christmas for me, if you know what I mean!?

I’m wondering how many people have more than one Scarlet Letter in progress?  (But then do I really need to add one more to my rotation?!)

Update on The Knox Family Sampler

Although I have been working on The Knox Family Sampler exclusively, I don't feel like I have made good progress. I think this is the longest it has ever taken for me to complete a sampler.

I finally finished the large letters. The filigree work took quite a while.

Between stitching the letters, I tried to extend the borders a bit. Next, I started on the houses. The first house was brick. There is a straight stitch around each brick which did slow things down.

The next house was smaller and pink. The stitching was quicker on this one.

Then I started on the first tree. I am currently filling in the foliage on this one. The stitch used is a wheat-ear stitch.

This is where I left off. It  Here is a photo of the whole sampler where I left off.

It does seem as if this one has taken a very long time, but I am hoping to finish it up soon now.

I've been remiss in posting my progress on my Hornbook Bestiary.  Here it is -- the bottom part after the rolling.

I think my favorite block so far is the sheep.  I love sheep!

I'm waiting with baited breath for Eleanor Parr to be released.  But in the meantime, my Hornbook is keeping me entertained!

Dona Dorothea and Visitors to our House

Happy Labor Day Weekend Everyone!  Hope everyone is having a great end of summer.  We had some terrific thunderstorms yesterday, but they cut the humidity (at least for a little while), so that was good.  It is funny that now summer is waning we are getting some of the “Philadelphia Summer Weather” – hazy, hot and humid.  But, that won’t last long.

Since I last posted on Dona Dorothea I have been busy constructing some buildings.  There is now a church on the left and the start of another building to the right of that (red roof complete…walls yet to go up).  To the bottom right of the checkerboard stag is a darling house and tree.  Love this building so much!  First up an overall shot and then a couple of close-ups of the new construction.  I hope to get some more completed today.

I decided to outline the cream colored flower (above the church) that hadn’t shown up very well the last time…decided outlining was better/easier than frogging.  I kept the cream color on the church since there is an outline of browns around it.  For the windows I used a different shade of cream – one that has the faintest tinge of pink to it, like what you might see in a window at sunset.  In these pictures it doesn’t look very different from the cream of the walls, but in person I can see a subtle difference and like it.

We have been having some visitors here to our house.  First up a deer who came down to forage for fallen apples under our tree.  So very pretty.  At times we have 4-5 under the tree at once.  But they are wary and easily spooked.

You can see a few apples on the tree in the picture above.  This year they are all small and every single one is damaged (we don’t use any pesticides).  So, no apple-sauce making this year!

Then Steve, our resident ground hog, dragged a cantaloupe that had fallen outside of the raised bed box across a good part of the yard and then sat and consumed it!  The funniest part was when he picked up the melon in his front paws (do they have paws??) and shoved his face into the flesh.  We were laughing out loud!  A little had to see in the picture below, but he is there.

Finally, we watched an excellent documentary on Netflix last night.  If you have a chance, we highly recommend “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” – a wonderful piece.

However you are spending your days, I hope you are enjoying.  I will have constructed some more buildings by the next time I post.

Beyond the Little X – An Interview with Faye, the “Carolinastitcher”!

$

For our September interview, we get to chat with Faye and hear all about her love of stitching, family and more.  Many of you may know Faye not only from the Scarlet Letter Year blog but also from her own blog Carolinastitcher.  One thing for sure she is a wonderful stitch and expert finisher.  I am always in awe when I see the creative ways she finishes pieces for herself and others!  And now we learn how and where her stitching journey started.

Faye, how old were you when you first picked up a needle and who taught you to stitch?
Being a graduate from the School of Textiles at North Carolina State University, Raleigh NC I have always had an interest in fabrics, design and decor.  My mom taught me to sew using a sewing machine at the age of 10 which intrigued me through high school and on into college.  However, I cross stitched for the first time in 1977 when I saw a friend in college cross stitching... I was fascinated!  She let me borrow her magazine and gave me a piece of 14 count white Aida, the DMC floss.... I went home and stitched the apple design as a gift to my mom.  So, I guess you might say I'm a self-taught stitcher from way back... But, that simple design jump started my love for needlework and stitching remains my passion to this day!

What was the first sampler that you stitched?

The first sampler I stitched was a small sampler titled Nabbys Garden by City Stitcher, that my mentor, Edna Medlin of Threads of Gold, sold me. Edna owned a shop that included cross stitch and all the supplies... I went in one day and she said, "Faye, I want you to stitch something on linen...."  I was SO reluctant, but knew that linen showcases our fine art so much better.  I was hooked on linen from that point on.  Her love for reproduction samplers rubbed off on me and I've remained a sampler lover~

What is your favorite time of day to stitch?

I love stitching in early morning time.... When our children were young, that would be the time of day I would have to myself... Before everyone else got up... So, as a habit, I still each morning from 530-630, before I head off to work.

Do you sit in a set place and what tools do you like to have on hand.

I stitch in a comfy chair in the den where I have an Ott light and all my supplies organized on a side table... Everyone knows that's "Mom’s chair"!

Do you use the stick and stab technique, or a sewing stitch?
I use the sewing method.  It is a rhythm that is comfortable for me.

Do you prefer to stitch in hand, or with a hoop or frame?

I use a 6" hoop a friend from France sent me.  It is small enough to be comfortable in my hand, yet has enough surface area so I'm not constantly repositioning it.

Progress photo of N. Hinde from Our Scarlet Letter Years blog

What is your favorite linen and thread?

My absolute favorite linen is a 40 Zweigert based dyed linen called Abecadarian by R&R Linen of Virginia Beach, VA.  It is a mid range colored soft linen and is perfect for nearly every sampler project I stitch.  As for threads, while I enjoy NPI, AVAS and Gloriana silks, I use DMC, GAST and Weeks threads a lot also.  If I had a money tree, I would use all Gloriana.

Have you tried specialty stitches and do you have a favorite?

I LOVE specialty stitches!! I love the Eyelet stitch and Queen stitch.

What was the first Scarlet Letter sampler you stitched?

My first Scarlet Letter sampler stitched was Rebecca Robinson.

Rebecca Robinson

I had always admired SL samplers on line, but didn't know if I could dedicate myself to sticking with it and complete one.  Nicola’s birthday event and SL challenge gave me the boost to not only stitch RR, but also complete An All was for an Appil and N.Hinde....

And All was for an Appil

Which designs appeal to you the most?

I love samplers with traditional color palettes.  You won't find me stitching using too many bright colors... I absolutely love reds and Quaker samplers.

Has working with reproduction samplers given you any new insight into the lives of the girls and women in the 17-18-19th centuries that you did not realize before?

Being a First grade educator, I love sharing stories in my classroom about young girls from earlier times and how many of their samplers were used as a teaching/ learning tool.  Children of today actually marvel at that idea and when I display one of my stitched samplers as an example, they become totally enthralled.  I am so fortunate to have a job where I can introduce samplers to six and seven year old children and couple my passion for stitching with my passion for teaching!

How do you display your stitched samplers?  Do you frame them?  Hang them singularly or in groupings?

I group samplers in my craftroom on ledges so I can easily move them.

I also enjoy seasonal decorating using my stitcheries.  I find various ways to display them in my home....

What other types of hand work do you enjoy?

I also enjoy doing finishing work for other stitchers... I paint and distress boxes to mount their stitched pieces on.... I sew their stitcheries into zippered project bags, wall hangings, table mats, ornaments, pillows, Diddie bags and many other ways.  I just enjoy helping others bring their pretty stitches to life in a way they use and enjoy them~

Any guilty secrets to confess?

I'm very picky..... But, I do enjoy a nice cup of coffee while I stitch!

What has been your worst needlework disaster?

I learned the hard way that a lot of our fibers run when moisture is applied.... It was a ruined, thankfully small stitchery.... With a life long lesson gained!

What Scarlet Letter sampler do you want to stitch next?

I hope to stitch Jane Atkinson next.  It will be an investment piece for me as I hope to stitch it in silks.

What other hobbies or interests do you enjoy?

I enjoy family time. We are avid University of North Carolina football fans.  We love the Fall football season and our time to gather for the tailgate cookouts and giving to the game.

Additionally, I love spending time at our second home at the beach. It is our getaway spot to relax, recharge and enjoy.  I feel very blessed~

Thank you so very much, Faye, for sharing your story with us!  Your pieces are an inspiration!  It is wonderful to hear that you are teaching your young students about samplers from centuries ago!  To see more of Faye’s stitching and finishing please visit her blog at Carolinastitcher.   I am sure it will become one of your favorites.

Happy Autumn and Happy Stitching to All!  xxx

Mary Lawson - a new start

Hello everyone!

It has been very long time since my last post although I check on whats new rather regularly. I have been thinking about starting a new Scarlet Letter sampler since I finished Ann Wimp, but simply didn't get there. Too many other on-going projects and some temporary lack of inspiration. Anyway, finally I am ready for a new start and that will be Mary Lawson. I love Scottish samplers and Adam & Eve, so this seemed to be a perfect choice.
I will use cotton threads - DMC and some hand-dyed threads for those colors that will have close match.
My choice of fabric may seem a bit strange. I will use the back side of Zweigart Newcastle Vintage Country Mocha. Somehow I didn't like the printed side of this fabric, colors are good, but the print is too regular and looks unnatural. But the color of the uniform back side is pleasant and I think it will go well with colors of the threads.
I am just at the beginning, so there is very little to see. But I am excited and looking forward to do the counted satin border.
Hopefully I will be back soon with some more pictures :)

Happy Stitching!
Inguna
