A New Beginning - A Post on behalf of Marsha Parker of The ScarletLetter
Having just finished up the graphs for Eleanor Parr and the Angels Mourning, I've just unwrapped an unusual Scottish sampler from its glass and wooden shroud to begin charting it.
Here are photos taken of the front and back of the sampler, and a detail of the front and the back of the mansion house in the lower right corner.
The lawn in front has been executed in turkey work which looks like plain back stitch in green on the back, but on the front where it has faded and the threads have been cut to achieve the bushy appearance it has faded to pale gold.
This demonstrates the importance of seeing the color on the back side of the original antique sampler in order to achieve a proper balance of color in the reproduction.

Eleanor Parr
The bird border on Eleanor is growing and I hope she will be finished in the next couple of weeks.
She is proving hard to photograph to show the true colours. Above is taken indoors and below outside in over cast daylight.
If Bianca is reading this I am unable to reply to your email as you are a no-reply blogger. If you could email me again and include your email address in the body of text I will respond.

Dona Dorothea - Another Update
Hi Everyone,
Wow! Another day or so and Fall will be here. Hard to believe, but our weather has felt like Fall. Cool mornings and evenings. It has been beautiful.
I have managed to construct another building in the Dona Dorothea sampler…a red barn. And, added a dog as well. A few more things to fill in (another dog, another stag) and then it will be on to the lower rows that are so, so pretty.
Not sure how quickly that will happen though. I’m heading to FL on Tuesday for work and Dona is just too large to take along. Instead I’m going to take two smalls I can start (if I can find the time) – both recent market releases and cute fall patterns. But with full day meetings and evening dinners, I’m not sure I will find the time or energy to pick up a needle. Luckily I’ve booked a massage for Tuesday afternoon – yay!!
Here are pictures of where Dona stands at the moment. First an overall shot and then close-ups of the barn and dog (strange looking dog I think). It looks like the checkerboard stag is stepping on that poor dog!
Hope everyone has a great week!

JCS 1707 Progress
Hello everyone!
I am finally doing an update on my JCS sampler. It's been some time since I've posted here. I had quite the tumultuous time in early September with the school strike, which is now over thankfully. But now I am busy with school and have little time for stitching, although stitching does occur. The JCS sampler is so ornate and beautiful and I think it'll take me a lot of time to get it completed. Here are some photos of what it looks like now...along with a naughty cat.
Titus always flops onto my stitching when I take it out to be photographed. Thankfully, he is gentle and doesn't use his claws but I do need to get the fur off of it!
Hugs to all and happy stitching!

Bird in a Bough
I wanted to share with you Edith Antl's Bird in a Bough.
Edith comments :-
"I changed a bit of it to fit it in this funky frame and the border wanted to do its own funky thing, too. (plus I tucked my name in the corner blocks.) I love this bird, he was great fun to stitch and he enlivens my kitchen"
I think Edith's choice of frame is perfect.

Elizabeth Martel - A new sampler
A new purchase arrived today. The sampler is in very good condition. (excuse the refections of the trees and me)
This bird reminded me of Eleanor but what really drew me to the sampler were scenes that fit so well into my son's little family and interests.
They have a lake and ducks. They even have a church across the lake, they wed in the church. Archie likes to feed the poultry and the dogs follow him everywhere.

Beyond the Little X - An Interview with Bhooma
For our October interview with sit a bit with Bhooma! No tricks here, only lots of treats from Bhooma about how much she enjoys stitching and a picture walk through her beautiful, diverse stitching of Scarlet Letter samplers and much, much more!
Bhooma, how old were you when you first picked up a needle and who taught you to stitch?
I was probably around 11 or 12. I learnt it from my mom. I also inherited her love of crafts.
Carousel ~ Teresa Wentzler |
What was the first sampler that you stitched?
The one that comes to mind is Metta Putfarcken by Sampler Berlin.
Metta Putfarcken 1848 ~ Samplers Berlin |
What is your favorite time of day to stitch?
I could stitch any time of the day but nights are my favorite time.
Do you sit in a set place and what tools do you like to have on hand?
I usually stitch in my family room. I am usually spread out on the couch with my stitching paraphernalia all around me. From my couch I can look outside and watch the birds chirping on the trees.
Angel of Love ~ Lavender & Lace |
Angel of Christmas ~ Lavender & Lace |
Do you use the stick and stab technique, or a sewing stitch?
I use the stick and stab technique.
Do you prefer to stitch in hand, or with a hoop or frame?
I use a frame. I would be lost without my millennium frame.
What is your favorite linen and thread?
I like lakeside linen. Among the hand-dyed linen, Sassy's hand dyed linen is my favorite. For threads, I like HDF and AVAS silks.
Long Dog Sampler using HDF silk |
Have you tried specialty stitches and do you have a favorite?
Yes, I have tried specialty stitches. I have to say my favorite is Jessica.
Mery Cox ~ Scarlet Letter |
When did you discover the Scarlet Letter?
I was introduced to Scarlet Letter when I saw one on the HDF forum and ordered a couple. I still haven't stitched them but have added quite a few to my stash :)
What was the first Scarlet Letter sampler you stitched?
Believe it or not, I stitched my first Scarlet Letter sampler when I joined Nicola’s Scarlet Letter Year challenge! My first SL finish is A Pattern Record.
A Pattern Record ~ Scarlet Letter |
Which designs appeal to you the most?
I like band samplers....
M.Woods 1759 |
BW1880 ~ Samplers Berlin |
ATS 1871 ~ Gigi R Designs |
...as well as Quaker style samplers.
Primera ~ Wiehenburg Samplers |
Quaker ~ Wiehenburg Samplers |
Any sampler with red and beige color scheme draws my attention.
Papa ~ Samplers Berlin |
Do Bears ~ Long Dog Samplers |
Gooitie Cornelius 1701 ~ Samplers Berlin |
How do you display your stitched samplers? Do you frame them? Hang them singularly or in groupings?
I used to frame my stitched needlework but not anymore.
EH 1875 ~ Samplers Berlin |
BKRM 1779 ~ Samplers Berlin |
What other types of hand work do you enjoy?
I knit, crochet and quilt. But of late, cross stitch has been my focus.
Needlepoint pictures |
Needlepoint sampler |
Any guilty secrets to confess?
I am guilty of licking my floss!!
What has been your worst needlework disaster?
Thankfully, so far, I have not had any needlework disasters!
Dorothea Padies ~ Samplers Berlin |
If you can pick just one, which is your favorite sampler that you stitched? And why?
If I have to pick a favorite among the samplers I stitched, it will be Mette Putfarcken. Even though the original was stitched in one color, I decided to stitch mine with three colors. This also was the first one I stitched over one.
Mette Putfarcken 1811-1848 |
I am currently working on Ellenor Wykcs and Jean Scrimgeowr.

Jean Scrimgeowr in progress |
What other hobbies or interests do you enjoy?
I like to read. I like to relax with a good book before falling asleep. If it is a good book I may end up staying up late, but of late have not done much reading. I also enjoy gardening.
Chatelaine Egypt Garden |
Thank you so much, Bhooma, for sharing your stitching journey with us. You have created an amazing collection of needlework. A feast for the eyes and a true inspiration! Naturally, I had to google the Jessica stitch!
We look forward to seeing your Scarlet Letter samplers continue to grow!
